Buying a Used Car Online? Plan the Seller-to-Carrier Handoff

Separate the purchase decision from the shipping plan, then connect them with a clear release date and a named pickup contact.

Finding the right used car online can make the rest of the transaction feel urgent. Before arranging transport, separate two decisions: whether to buy this vehicle and how to move it after the seller releases it. A shipping request cannot verify the car's mechanical condition or complete the purchase paperwork. A clear handoff plan connects the two processes without confusing them.

Finish your purchase checks first

For a dealer purchase, the Federal Trade Commission's used-car guide recommends an independent mechanical inspection and explains the Buyers Guide. A vehicle history report does not replace that inspection. Review the written sale terms, especially the warranty or “as is” information, before treating the transaction as complete.

Keep purchase documents and transport documents in separate folders. One answers what you bought and on which terms; the other describes the movement of the vehicle. Give each folder a clear name and save the seller's contact information where you can find it quickly. This small organizational step helps when several people become involved.

Ask when the car can actually leave

“Sold” and “ready for carrier pickup” may be different stages. Ask the seller to confirm the release process, the person authorized to release the vehicle and any appointment requirements. Discuss which documents the seller and carrier need for this particular transaction rather than assuming every dealer follows one procedure.

Bold's online buyer shipping page identifies release status, access, condition and carrier acceptance as details to confirm. Use that as a prompt for a direct conversation with the seller. Do not submit a pickup date that depends on unfinished paperwork without explaining that dependency.

Create one handoff message

Prepare a short message you can share with the coordinator and seller. Include the vehicle's identifying details, pickup address, named contact, business hours and confirmed release status. Add whether the car starts and moves, where the keys will be available and whether there are access restrictions.

Ask the seller to flag anything that differs from the listing, such as a low battery, a warning light or an accessory installed after the photographs. The aim is to remove surprises at loading. If the seller cannot answer a condition question, record it as unknown and ask how that uncertainty affects the proposed equipment.

Arrange a condition record at both ends

Decide who will review the vehicle with the carrier at pickup. Ask that person to obtain the pickup record and clear photographs, then send copies to the receiving contact. A photograph in the sales listing may be useful background, but it does not show what was recorded when the carrier took possession.

At delivery, have the pickup record available so the receiver can compare it with the car. Our inspection and Bill of Lading checklist explains how to organize that comparison. Avoid making the receiver search through a long sales conversation while the handoff is happening.

Match the shipping request to the purchase

Choose the proposed equipment based on the actual vehicle and its loading needs. Start with open car shipping, or discuss enclosed equipment if exposure or special loading is a priority. Also tell the coordinator about any seller storage deadline and ask the seller directly how storage charges work; do not assume transport timing overrides them.

When the release plan is clear, request a route review. MileRelay is an independent lead referral website, with Bold Auto Transport as the intended provider. The request does not finalize your purchase, reserve a carrier or guarantee pickup. Keep the seller, coordinator and receiver working from the same latest plan.

Keep exploring.
